Prep for Spring

I have been feeding light syrup for several weeks and I tried dry feeding pollen substitute, but the bees were not interested in it. There seem to be more bees now than at any point last summer and fall. To be fair, I may have forgotten exactly how things were last year.

When I inspected on 3/17/2017, the top box had brood spread across seven of the eight frames and the bottom box contained a small amount of brood. I decided to reverse the brood boxes a second time. I noticed there seems to be a lot of drone cells throughout the comb. I will need to keep an eye on this and may need to cut some out.

I have been busy preparing equipment for the arrival of two more packages of bees. My two new hives will have screened bottom boards, although my first hive will still be using a solid bottom board. The packages of bees should be arriving on 3/31/2017.
